Position Summary:

The Vice President of Web Development & Architecture is a senior executive leader responsible for setting and driving the overall technical strategy, vision, and execution of Milan's web ecosystem — with a sharp focus on ecommerce performance, conversion rate optimization (CRO), and scalable digital growth. This role blends executive leadership with deep technical authority, serving as the primary architect of Milan's web platforms and a strategic thought partner to the C-suite.

This is predominantly a leadership and strategy role (approximately 15% hands-on technical involvement / 85% leadership, strategy, and business partnership), requiring an executive who can translate organizational ambition into measurable digital outcomes. The ideal candidate brings a proven track record leading high-performing engineering organizations in ecommerce or high-traffic consumer web environments, with demonstrated success improving conversion metrics, revenue per visitor, and overall site performance at scale.

Beyond execution, this leader is a true business driver — taking deep ownership of digital outcomes, championing a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement, and proactively identifying opportunities to move the organization forward through technology. They bring executive presence, shape enterprise-wide strategy, and hold themselves and their teams accountable to measurable business results — not just technical delivery.

Responsibilities:

Executive Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multi-tiered organization of web developers, architects, designers, and engineers, cultivating a high-performance, innovation-driven culture.
  • Set a clear vision and roadmap for the web development organization, aligned to Milan's growth strategy and digital commerce objectives.
  • Define and drive performance frameworks, career pathing, and organizational structure to attract, retain, and grow top-tier engineering talent.
  • Serve as the senior technical advisor to the C-suite and executive leadership — translating complex business challenges into actionable web technology strategy and presenting roadmaps to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Oversee department budgets, resource planning, vendor relationships, and technology investments.
  • Champion cross-functional collaboration across marketing, product, data, and operations to ensure cohesive digital strategy and execution.
  • Proactively identify opportunities where web technology, ecommerce innovation, and AI tooling can streamline processes, reduce costs, or unlock new revenue streams across the organization.

Ecommerce Strategy & Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

  • Own the ecommerce web strategy end-to-end — from user acquisition through to conversion — ensuring the web platform is a primary driver of revenue growth.
  • Build and lead a rigorous CRO practice, establishing frameworks for A/B and multivariate testing, funnel analysis, and data-driven experimentation to continuously improve conversion rates and revenue per visitor.
  • Define KPIs and performance benchmarks for web-driven revenue, conversion, bounce rates, session quality, and other key digital commerce metrics.
  • Stay ahead of ecommerce UX/UI trends, competitive landscape shifts, and emerging consumer behavior patterns to ensure Milan's digital experience remains best-in-class.
  • Drive strategy around landing page performance, lead generation funnels, and digital booking/conversion flows specific to Milan's business model.

Architecture, Technology & Platform Reliability

  • Set and govern enterprise-wide web architecture standards, ensuring scalability, security, resilience, and performance across all platforms and properties.
  • Lead development strategy utilizing Next.js, React, and related modern front-end technologies to deliver performant, production-grade applications.
  • Oversee cloud infrastructure and deployment strategy leveraging Vercel and other cloud platforms, ensuring robust CI/CD pipelines and DevOps excellence.
  • Define and enforce coding standards, architectural guidelines, QA processes, and engineering best practices across all teams.
  • Evaluate and drive adoption of emerging technologies and frameworks that advance Milan's digital capabilities and competitive positioning.
  • Establish and enforce SLAs, uptime standards, and incident response protocols; drive continuous improvement in monitoring, observability, and proactive risk management.

AI Tools & Innovation Leadership

  • Establish the organizational vision and governance framework for AI-powered development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, v0) across the web development organization.
  • Identify and evaluate emerging AI capabilities with potential to enhance ecommerce performance, personalization, CRO, internal tooling, or operational efficiency.
  • Sponsor and guide the prototyping and scaling of AI-driven features — including personalization engines, intelligent automation, and LLM-powered user experiences — that generate measurable business value.
  • Build a culture of responsible AI adoption with clear policies, best practices, and enablement programs across all engineering teams.

Qualifications:

Required Qualification

  • 12+ years of progressive web development experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or executive role (Director level or above) overseeing large-scale web platforms.
  • Demonstrated track record of driving measurable ecommerce growth and conversion rate improvement in a high-traffic, consumer-facing web environment.
  • Deep expertise in CRO methodologies, A/B and multivariate testing platforms (e.g., Optimizely, VWO, Google Optimize), funnel analysis, and digital experimentation frameworks.
  • Strong command of modern web technologies and frameworks (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js).
  • Proven experience leading and scaling high-performing engineering organizations across multiple team levels.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and hands-on familiarity with Vercel or comparable deployment and hosting platforms.
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and web performance optimization at scale.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating and governing AI-powered development tools in a professional engineering environment.
  • Proven ability to operate as a senior solutions consultant and executive thought partner — bridging technical and business leadership.
  • Exceptional communication, executive presence, and stakeholder management skills; ability to present complex technical strategy to C-level audiences.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with headless CMS platforms, REST/GraphQL APIs, and third-party integrations.
  • Background in Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Experience building or integrating AI-driven features within web applications (e.g., LLM APIs, AI chatbots, automation workflows).
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred
